Our mom has been doing the Portal Post Office for 45 years. The post office is just a contract post office which is house in one of the original one room schoolhouses back in the day. Our dad when he was alive would go to the post office and help our mom put up the mail. We are a small community in Southwest Arizona. Now with our mom at the age of 86 needs to retire. The post office is open four hours a day Monday - Friday and one hour on Saturday. What money our mom made which was under $10,000 no retirement or benefits paid all expense with the money she made. The expense are propane, insurance/bond, instead of paying rent, we have to do all repairs to the building and anything else that needed to get paid. Our family is putting our mom's contract in a LLC called Portal Community Post Office LLC. This is the only way to save our post office which has been in our community forever. We have the following expenses to improve services at the post office. We need to purchase a meter/scale, telephone/internet, pay wages for the clerks. Remember this expense will not be paid by the US Post Office. We know the community has been used to mom paying all the expenses for 40 years plus but now if we are going to save the Post Office, we are going to need help. We know the big question is why should I pay for a free service--well it is a contract station and all they pay is the wage mom gets. We are hopeful that if the post office revenue will increase and in doing that, we can renegotiate the contract. We do have new stamps to buy. Endangered Species and Waterfalls-- Please think of us when buying stamps or mailing packages. Our little post office is important to our community which sits in the heart of the Chiricahua Mountain and is one of the birding hotspots in the United States. If it closes, we will be forced to travel 52 miles to get our packages. Please help us save the Portal Community Post Office that is the hub of our town.
